Stop That Drip!!

Our Green School's Committee was concerned about water wastage at our school so we decided to do a tap audit.  This challenge allowed us to develop our awareness about the threats to water conservation in our school.  We wanted to learn about how water is wasted and wanted to make all the pupils in our school aware of how we could save water.

Faye, Abbey, Mark, Ryan and Niamh did an audit of dripping taps in the school. Most of our taps are new so don’t drip, however the two taps in the prefab were dripping. Ryan, Niamh and Mark measured how much water each tap wasted in a minute and then calculated how much water was wasted in an hour, day and year. Faye and Abbey asked children from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th to estimate how much water a dripping tap wastes

Here are our results:

Faye and Abbey reported the results to the children in the school and asked them to make sure that they turn taps fully ito the off position. They tied a piece of ribbon to the dripping taps to remind children to turn them off properly. All 100 pupils in our school were spoken to and asked to take responsibility for making this change .   If the drip is stopped in both of these taps, our school could prevent 70,956 litres being wasted each year.
