Old ideas alleviate new fears
Posted by Reichenau Primary , South Africa on 3 July 2020

Reichenau Primary schools is one of our newest GSS schools and it was great to see them after a very long lockdown. Whilst all masked up and adhering to strict social distancing protocol, the excitement of being back at school was pulpable. After setting up tippy taps and showing the children how to effectively wash your hands using the 20 second Happy Birthday song, we then met up with a few teachers to workshop them on the latest information regarding the covid virus. A visual demonstration delivered by Julia, showed how corona is spread through coughing and sneezing. Using a spray bottle Julia demonstration how when even when speaking face to face with another person, a fine mist of salvia spray can be dispersed, using a syringe she was to demonstrate how when coughing and sneezing, larger droplets ( possibly containing viral particals) could be dispersed at a much higher speed and longer range. This is vitally important to 1. Wear a mask OR sneeze/cough into the nap of your sleeve 2. Maintain a social distance of at least 1.5 meters. After a 2 hour workshop and lots of lively discussion, it wasencouraging to see how much the teacher appreciated our input, “ Whilst the government is doing their best to workshop principal on infection control, there is still a huge gap in knowledge within the ranks of the teacher” say Principal Nomusa Mkize “ Thank you for giving us knowledge and confidence”
