It was wonderful to arrive at the school to witness first hand how the tippy taps from last visit have been fully utilised. In time of covid and an even more pressing existential threat of climate change, people are starting to realize just how precious water will be in the future and the saving starts now.
On this note, we commenced our climate change lesson with a general tap-in discussion as to how many children’s parents have observed through their lifetime the change in the areas weather and climate conditions. When ask why, many children replied some vague answer about the ozone or air pollution. Even though climate change is such a real issue plaguing our everyday lives, many children in South Africa are still aware of the true consequences and the actions we can take to combat this man-made problem. From here, with the use of the visuals and a fun climate change game we were able to discuss the science of the greenhouse effect, how by burning fossil fuels and deforestation our actions were contributing to the crisis and what we can do about it. Many of us feel helpless as the problem feels so large but eating less meat and more plant based foods is one of the best ways we can make a difference. Do you know that animal industry contributes 25% of all global Green House emmsions. If we stop to think what we put on our plate, we really can help us all veer off this dangerous path!!
