On Tuesday the 25th of October, we held our International Celebration Event at the HSBC Tower in Canary Wharf to celebrate the fantastic work that all our top International Water Explorer teams had done over the year. With over 100 guests from 11 countries – including some from as far away as South Africa and Bermuda – the atmosphere in the room was electric.
We watched videos from each country – each one packed full of all the Water Explorer teams’ wonderful water saving achievements. From reusing 40,000L of grey water in South Africa, to cleaning up rivers in Poland, and a Flash Mob in Rome, it was truly inspiring to see the teams’ amazing work. To add to the fun we were lucky to have ‘Luchi and Ota’ back with us to share their upcycling expertise with the Explorers who created some fantastic new bags and tops from old t-shirts. Queen Mary’s biological sciences team were also back with their live crayfish, helping to bring the fresh water species challenge to life.
With bucket loads of great water-saving work from every country, the judges had a tough decision to make. There were happy faces all round as the judges gave out awards for the efforts of some of the other teams. France’s team were awarded the Community Impact Award, Italy earned the Values Award, South Africa received the Water Savings Award, and the Spanish team deserved a very special mention for rallying together and showing such fantastic support for their Explorers! But in the end, Turkey were recognised as the overall winner – an announcement that was met with a huge cheer from all. They’d wowed the judges by working with local farmers to encourage them to reduce their pesticide use; using a short film they’d created to help them with their task.
Thank you to everyone for helping us to celebrate so many waterful achievements!
