This year, International Coastal Clean-up Day was on Saturday 15 September. Teamed up with Ushaka Marine World, Woolworths and Schools from around Kwa-Zulu Natal, 14 of Scottsville School’s extremely dedicated Enviro-club learners, Mr Mkhize, Mrs Cawood and Mr Sithalpersad, gathered on Ushaka beachfront to help make a difference. Everyone received a cool T-shirt to wear and after registrations and an amazing dolphin show introduction, the litter clean up began. Hundreds of people swept through Ushaka beach, collecting as much litter as possible, and enjoying the sunshine and the waves crashing on the shore. Thereafter, it was time to count and record the amount of items collected. This information is collated and each year a poster is produced, indicating the over-all amount of rubbish collected nationwide. Thank you to Woolworths, who provided a healthy lunch, packed in awesome “trash basher” drawstring bags. The learners who took part in this initiative were rewarded on route home, with a McDonald’s ice cream – thank you, Mr Mkhize. We look forward to taking part in this event annually, and remember that we are looking for possible candidates to come along. Keeping our environment healthy and sustainable is a way of life, so remember, boys and girls (and parents!), to “Do One Thing”!
