LEGO Pond Life

Hello! My name is Joshua Whitehouse and I am 14 years old. I live in the Western Cape, South Africa, on a nature reserve in the mountains, and am very passionate for caring for the natural world around us, particularly the fresh waters of the world. I love wildlife, and want, with all my heart to conserve and protect it, and I believe that the best way to do this is to spread awareness of the endangered world.

I also have a huge passion for building with LEGO bricks. LEGO is an extremely educational toy and is very well known, so has a great potential to teach people about the world they live in. Combining my two passions, I believe I have found a brilliant way to spread conservation awareness… and I was wondering if you could help me?

I have built a LEGO model of a pond, along with two detailed frogs, a lily and lily pad and a realistic dragonfly – all classic pond fauna and flora (you can see pictures in the links below). LEGO does not often make LEGO sets that are based in the natural world, but there is a way that my educational pond model could become a real LEGO set. Then children (and adults) all around the world could buy it, and learn about the natural, and endangered, world through play.

There is a site on the web called LEGO Ideas and on it you can submit LEGO models as a fan designer, in the hope that they will be made as LEGO sets. However, you first have to gather a massive amount of support: 10,000 supporters in total! That is a huge number and very hard to get. But, with your help and the help of your friends, we should be able to make it, and when it is a set, the possiblilities for spreading environmental awareness are many!

What you can do to help not just me, but the world around us – is support my model on LEGO Ideas.

All you have to do is follow this link and you will find my project, LEGO Pond Life:

Then, simply click the bright blue support button! You will have to sign in to LEGO Ideas, but this barely takes a few minutes.

I know this is a bit arduos, but it will only take a few minutes of your time and the result will be worth it. Just imagine: a LEGO set of a pond in your schools play area, promoting both amazing fun and awarness of the world around us to all the children and students of the school!

Please can I also ask you to share my model with all those you think would like to help support it: the students in your school, your teachers, friends, family and on your social media sites (NB: supporters need to be over 13 years of age). This way you will be able to help get even closer to reaching our goal of 10,000 supporters. An easy way to do this is to share our post via FaceBook:

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to read this article. I really hope that you will be able to help.
