Resources
Grade 5-6 children learned about the process of fracking whereby massive holes are drilled into the ground and water, toxic lubricating chemicals and sand ( a highly valued and scarce resource in South Africa) is channeled under great pressure fracturing the under bed of rocks and releasing shale gas to be used as an energy resource. They learnt that oil companies like Sunga Sunga are prospecting for gas in the beautiful Midland area, an area that attracts thousands of tourist and valued for its good fertile soils and temperate climate. Fracking does not just use highly carcinogenic chemicals but also lots of water, being a water scarce country, it begs a question, how are we going to get more water when already we are experiencing the worst drough in 80 years.. We also learnt that Fracking can contaminate our ground water aquifers, poisoning our 30% of our water Resources. Fracking provides only temporary jobs in the short term, in the long term when the gass runs out, the land will be devastated and farming will lose productivity. After an informative lesson, we then signed a petition to say NO to fracking . We also made Fracking pamplets in isisZulu and English to warn the community about the devastating hazards of fracking.
