The GSS Water Explorer team has always been passionate about pulses and conducting a follow up nutritional workshop for the teachers provided the perfect platform for initiating the learners to the magic of beans, peas and legumes. Not only are pulses a hardy, drought resistant plant perfect for changing climates, they are also a fabulous antidote to treating some of the co-mobilities associated with Covid-19 fatalities. Many of the people who have responded the worst in the face of this pandemic also have underlying lifestyle diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes. Pulses are packed with protein without the unhealthy fats that can cause high blood pressure. An inexpensive pulsy meals fills the belly whilst lowering the blood sugar. There are 20 000 different varieties of pulses so nobody will get bored. After the lessons, the learners were then tasked to grow and compare two different pulses- chickpeas and sugar bean. This is an exercise in scientific understanding, learning to compare and contrast, formulate a hypothesis and control for variables. We look forward to seeing the results.
